Chiropractic is a health care discipline that focuses on the relationship between structure (primarily the spine) and function (as coordinated by the nervous system) and how that relationship affects ones health without the use of drugs. Chiropractors specialize in manual adjustments that help relieve pain and restore normal functioning to the joints, supporting muscles and ligaments. Your nervous system is the body’s information highway sending messages from the body to the brain and vice versa. The nervous system travels out between the joints in your spine to carry these messages. Stress or strain on the vertebrae can irritate the nerves at that level and any other part of the body that nerve supplies. This is called a “subluxation” or restriction. This is why a problem with your spine can cause symptoms such as arm or leg pain. Subluxations do not always cause pain during the initial stages of stress or strain on the vertebrae and therefore those who are not experiencing back or neck discomfort can still benefit from periodic chiropractic adjustments to help recognize a problem before symptoms develop. Correcting subluxations can reduce pain and inflammation, reduces muscle spasm and tension, normalizes spinal biomechanics and more importantly, can remove nerve irritation and interference, which can improve overall health and wellness of the individual.
